Artisan
Standard # 201
Body: 1-pc. Honduran
Mahogany
Neck: Honduran Mahogany
Fretboard: Consecutive cut BRW
Pickup: Dogear Thorn GT-90 staple-top
Bridge: Pigtail wraparound
Color: Faded cherry red
Initial tone report:
I can't wait to hear what Shane has to say about how these compare to each other. It is as
tight as a controlled experiment as you can do when comparing Mahogany to Korina. The
fretboards are consecutive cut from the same billet, the pickups are the same, the bridge
the same, headstock angle, electronics, etc...all as tight as possible.
Here is what I hear -
#201 - Mahogany: Bold and big. The attack seems a little slower and the tone is a bit
fuller. It pops from the speaker and hits you in the chest like a sledgehammer - boom.
Thick and with a little more bottom end.
#202 - Korina: Punchy and direct with more jangle. The attack is quicker with more
brilliance. A tighter bottom end but the notes blossom beautifully.
The differences aren't huge, but they are noticable to me and Tony here at the shop. They
both sound great.
I have said it before, playing a single pickup guitar is a blast. Your techniqe changes,
you manipulate the Volume and Tone controls way more, and it's just plain fun!
Shane, I hope you love your new Thorns. Please let us know your thoughts once you've spent
some time with them.
Thank you!!!
Ron
